Backgammon is a game of tremendous skill and strategy and it encompasses a mindset that many chess players possess. The game itself appears basic, almost simplistic in its layout and design. At its core there are 24 points – 12 a piece for each player and a series of checkers. But what is of more importance is the manner in which players must maneuver their pieces off the board, by blocking and out-pacing their opponent. The game has developed a healthy following and indeed has become a big-time game for punters and players alike.

Tournaments and rankings in the American Backgammon Tournament (ABL)

The backgammon tourneys on offer are competitions involving large numbers of players. These players compete at the same time for a piece of the pie. While the takings are traditionally less than that of games like Texas Hold’em Poker and Blackjack, they are nonetheless substantial. The best part of backgammon tournaments is that they contain multiple matches and they are really social events. If you add up all the individual matches, the winner will be the one who has proven him/herself over the whole tournament. The draw of competing players is randomly assigned and the action is really hot.

Examples of backgammon tournaments

Just recently the American Blackjack Tournament hosted the fabulous ABT Thousands Islands Backgammon Tournament. This was played between July 30th and August 1st, 2010 at Alexandria Bay in New York. The winners as listed from 1st thru 3rd place were Eden Windish from California 2nd Richard Munitz from New York and 3rd Jason Pack from New York. There were also 8 teams competing in the doubles tournament with Irina and Kenny Litzenberger of Virginia taking first place. New York’s Frank DiMaggio with Al Hodis claimed 2nd place. Shifting gears to the west, it was the ABT Nevada State Backgammon Tournament back in April 2010. This was between April 14th and 18th. Patrick Gibson of California ran through the competition and Scott Cole of Nevada trumped the rest with his Intermediate placing.

In order of their rankings on the ABT list, here are the players:

Richard Munitz on 31.45 points

Kit Woolsey on 31.34 points

John O’Hagan on 26.67 points

Gary Fries on 25.20 points

David Rubin on 21.17 points

Dorn Bishop on 18.60 points

Ed O’Laughlin on 18.31 points

Jesse Eaton on 18.26 points

Bob Steen on 17.33 points

Gary Bauer on 16.78 points

For me there’s nothing better than partaking in exciting backgammon tournaments across the USA. Let’s start off in the city that never sleeps – New York City. My first point of call is the New York Metropolitan Backgammon Open. This is the first ABT event of the calendar year. Folks, this champion of a tournament spans 4 days and the fellow who put it all together was none other than good old Vick Ashkenazi – who incidentally defeated Slick Rick Barabino. This contest is loaded with local players from the 5 Burroughs of NYC. In fact as of 2009 the only ‘outsider’ in this backgammon pack is Steady Steve Sax from the Golden State. As a matter of fact this big-time backgammon event was run and ruled by players from the Big Apple.

Tournament information across the USA

Last year’s event didn’t actually take place in New York City – ironically – it was played in Jersey City at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. News of this event spread far and wide and I for one was positively impressed by the offerings. There were several tournaments and other events taking place with a special emphasis on the Liberty Cup Masters, the NY Doubles championship and the Seniors Tournament. This trifecta of NYC backgammon tourneys is hugely popular with East Coasters. Moving onto Chicago Illinois, there’s lots of backgammon buzz there too. It’s known as the Chicago Open ABT Tournament and it is hot news. This big-money event was put together by Howard Markowitz – a champion of Vegas event organization – who is also the co-director of Backgammon World Championships in Monte Carlo.

In exciting backgammon news from the American Backgammon Tour (ABT) the following winners have been reported:

In the Thousand Islands Backgammon Tournament played between July 30 and August 1 2010 in New York City the scorecard includes the following players:

Eden Windish from Canada

Richard Munitz from New York City

Jason Pack from Washington DC

In the 30th Chicago Open Backgammon Tournament played between May 28th and May 31st in Rosemont, Illinois the scorecard includes the following players:

Tak Morioka from Illinois

Stick Rice from Ohio

Carol Joy Cole from Michigan

In the Nevada State Backgammon Tournament played between April 14th and April 18th 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada the scorecard includes the following players:

Patrick Gibson from California

Stick Rice from Ohio

Joe Russell from California

Backgammon is loosely defined as a contest to see who can remove all his/her checkers off the board as quickly as possible. It’s important to note that that in this big-money game at least, the shortest distance between any two single points is not always a straight line. I’ve seen more than my fair share of beginners ‘hit’ regularly – removing as many checkers as possible, which is not the best backgammon strategy. If you’re looking to formulate a winning backgammon game plan then you are advised to read the game’s instruction manual – because there are more ways to skin a cat than most folks thought possible.

I’ve learned invaluable tips and tricks along the way. Here are some of them:

When it comes to exposure then you should take due cognizance of your opponent’s board. If he/she has many more points, it will be tough for you to return to the fray after being hit.

When it comes to distribution I find it more useful to leave three checkers each on two different points as opposed to four checkers one and 2 on the other.

Blocking is really important too. I like to build lots of points without gaps between them directly in front of my opponent’s checkers in my home board. This also blocks his/her escape plan.

Remember to curtail your desire to hit your opponent’s checkers if it is going to make you susceptible to defeat in the long-term. Build important anchors in backgammon – these will help establish defensive points.

What you can expect for the remainder of 2010

The American Backgammon Tour has featured plenty of hard-fought contests this year already. But there are many more to come including these fine events:

The Wisconsin State Championships from September 3rd – 6th in Madison WI

The Colorado State Championships from September 24th – 26th in Aurora CO

The Illinois State Championships from October 8th – 10th in Peoria IL

The Mid-Atlantic Championships from October 14th – 17th in Towson MD

The Las Vegas Open from November 10th – 14th in Las Vegas NV

And those are only the American Backgammon Tour (ABT) contests. There are many others including Backgammon Freerolls, the International Backgammon Alliance (IBA), Backgammon Online Tournaments, Play364 Backgammon Tourneys and many, many more. If you’re curious to know which players are leading the pack in the ABT 2010 contest, here they are:

Kit Woolsey on 31.34 points
John O’Hagan on 26.67 points
Richard Munitz on 25.74 points
Gary Fries on 25.20 points
Dorn Bishop on 18.60 points

Play the game for unadorned relaxation, for having fun or participate in it to get thrilled by the exhilarating antagonism, the game of backgammon is for virtually anyone and everyone. Still others just play the game to earn real money by risking their own hard earned cash. A relatively simple to learn game, the moves and rules the same involves are far less intricate than bridge, chess and many other well-liked games.

The experts at these games often have commented that, to improve your game, play it. Playing and practicing is the best learning strategy, as self-learning is the best learning, is the game virtue, one must-follow here. The game in its current form has been around for a long time; with its genesis dating back to 5000 years from now, one can play online with existent people or offline alongside the open source available online.

A race game for 2 players, often one can develop their own strategies, but it is always superior to check-on how other players play, as one must remember the saying, “while in Rome play the way Romans do…” With us, become a winner, the game strategy and rules knowledge is your weapon in the war of this game, to increase your chances of success and win jackpots, at backgammon.

Always remember while playing, no matter how good you are, but still you do not discern the whole thing, even the veteran players on the planet follow the rules and keep on learning to improve their game. If you wish to enhance your gaming skills, read books, online articles, practice, and take lessons. And try to get a good and an apt explanation to all your queries, by the online gurus or the innumerable sites and books offering these. Reading, asking questions and keeping your eyes and ears open and alert at all times while playing, will help you play better.

Backgammon, has all the more became a phenomenon in today’s gaming scenario, the online sector has truly added to the game’s popularity and has exceptionally enhanced the number of players, the game now has worldwide. Of all the facts, the bottom-line is there is something about the game which makes it a really great activity, getting popular and slowly making roots as the favorite pastime activity among all age groups.

Often called a game of luck and skill, backgammon is a game of chance. When someone wins he gives the credit to his gaming skills, while on the other hand if someone losses in the game, the bad luck factor is given the whole claim. But always bear in mind that like chess, this is a game of visual patterns, where if the patterns fit mutually amicably, the move makes sense in a significant and great manner. Backgammon games are slowly but steadily, gaining popularity alongside the other popular casino games, played at an online or a land casino on the planet.
